Environmental Doomsday
The Doomsday Clock in
2019 is set to two minutes to midnight which indicates that humanity is closer
to its collective destruction than it has been at any point in history since
World War II. One of the chief reasons for this and one of the most pressing
issues humanity is facing today is the rapid and unchecked destruction of the
environment. With the oceans being choked with pollution, air quality
degradation making it difficult to even breathe, climate change radically
transforming the extremities of weather cycles and the decrease in biodiversity
propelled by extinction of species, it is at us the finger points to when we
look for who to blame.
Nowadays many more people
are aware of what the ramifications of environmental destruction are than they
were a decade ago. There are campaigns promoting recycling, using reusable
goods and stopping the use of plastic straws, however most of these movements
have very little impact on the overall effect on saving the planet since there
is almost nothing being done about the source of the problem – profit fueled
industrialization and urbanization with almost zero consideration for the
environmental and ecological aftermath. There is also dire concern about how
little funding goes into the research and development of alternative, cleaner
energy sources and sustainable technologies to overcome the effects of
pollution and environmental damage accumulated over the years.
Although I believe
awareness on environmental concerns is important, what is even more vital is
the development of technologies and improvement of methodologies to initiate
progress and advancement through a decree of sustainability. Keeping this in
mind, my plans to pursue Environmental Studies alongside Biochemistry in
university will help me to amplify my knowledge on different aspects of the
environment while allowing me to pursue research to deepen my pool of
understanding. Having in-depth knowledge on a combination of these two subject
areas will prepare me for a future where I can work on the biochemical issues
underlying environmental concerns and develop sustainable bio-technologies to
overcome the damage that is present while playing a role in preventing further
destruction.
We still
have a long way to go, but we cannot sit back and let the planet become barren
and waste away. Rampant destruction over the years has brought us on the brink
of extinction of life on Earth, and now, it is high time to act.
